no one:
me: people want to know what I, a person generally known only as a once on the internet, thought about the latest (g)i-dle comeback

A little known fact about me is that I was a hardcore gidle stan in mid 2019 to early 2020, so much so that I had tickets to see them, by myself, in... May of 2020 RIP. Even though I'll never get the chance to see soojin in person ever again, I still casually like gidle, even thought I'm not hardcore like I used to be. My fave comeback was HANN and the releases after that were good, not great. Still enjoyed them though.

ANYWAY, gidle kind of faded to the background for me until fuckin now. Tomboy has kicked down the door of my relaxed casual stanning for most girl groups, goddammit. Here are my thoughts.

CONCEPT/VIDEO

Truly enjoyed every second of the music video, though (i literally hate to be this person but I'm going to do it for reasons) I could have used more Shuhua. Like the barbie doll murder scene was great, but it also robbed us of her whole postchorus dance break in the MV, and she looks so good doing it on music shows. But yes, like everyone looked so good that I could ignore the lyrics lmao.

BUT I am not one to beat a dead line distribution horse, and things were excellent. Miyeon always sounds good, but she sounded very very good in the prechoruses.

MUSIC
The song is a BANGER and you're lying if it's not. I love love love the punk pop Avril Lavigne vibes, the whistle throughout, the song structure is also a banger imo? I think a lot of folks have rightly criticized title tracks of gidle to be weirdly short, or feel like they're purely playing up replay value by ending way too soon (Senorita I'm looking at you). Like many of them could have used another chorus or literally an ending coda or SOMETHING to finish the song off.

Tomboy suffers no such ailments. I think the song itself is perfect in length, the bridge section, the outro the build up of choruses all to NEITHER MAN NOR WOMAN is actually so fucking good. I don't have a ton to say on the dance, but the dance in THIS section is sooooo good and perfect for the lyrics and for Yuqi?? (I also sound like a pure Yuqi stan right now despite Minnie being my actual top bias and I'm sorry. I have nothing to defend myself with.)

LYRICS
This...is where they lost me for a minute. And I mean a literal minute, since that's how long those random English verses felt tbh. Some of it was well placed, I mean "I'm fuckin tomboy" is iconic. BUT. Can anyone out there explain what does "look at my toe" mean?? I feel like I can infer most of what Soyeon means in the rap part, though it's also a little...eh. But I hate the my girl Minnie has such an incomprehensible verse tbh. And I just can't with more Coke product placement, I truly cannot.

HOWEVER. Neither man no woman, just me Idle??? The best line of the song. And that section, I mean, you know already. I just feel like I have to shut off my comprehension for the first verse and the rap and pretend it's just music.

STYLING
Everyone looked amazing, but we need to acknowledge Miyeon's bloody pearl necklace moment, as a society. That is all.

Oh wait, Yuqi's spiky beret in The Show stage. God she's so cute.

the GIRLS
Soojin's untimely departure really didn't hurt me that much due to the fact that I have a fairly strong Minnie/Yuqi bias line. And I can appreciate a good Soyeon rap moment too, but I once cried because I saw Yuqi doing the Likey choreography and it was so cute that I shed tears. Like she has that kind of grip on me. (I am very bi). Plus I do feel like I must stan Shuhua for Taiwanese solidarity.

THEREFORE, this comeback exactly my cup of tea in terms of Minnie, Yuqi, and even Shuhua getting to shine (esp Shuhua let's be real). Minnie looks amazing and i want to see her say fuck but hey this will do! Yuqi is the MVP of this whole comeback imo (if you can't tell by my ranting lmao), but Shuhua gets a gold star for improvement. And I know that sounds really backhanded, but she is really serving looks these days. I think she's even more eye catching than Miyeon on stage now in terms of stage presence and performing. There's just something about Shuhua.

Soyeon is just so consistent and good that it's hard to say anything about her you know? Like you know she's going to be giving us everything of the sort, so you expect it? And Miyeon... she's not giving me nothing so that's good. Is it the things we need for this comeback? No imo, but she is trying I just feel like her vibe is not super suited to this concept and that's okay.

Anyway I'm obsessed thank you for your time.

My first dreamwidth post! I always want to talk about kpop to the void so what better place to do it.

Since it's January 8th 2022, let's think about 2021 kpop. While I do understand the impulse to bash the year in terms of impact, I feel like there were still some absolute gems released this year, in order of how much I adore them:

Honorable mentions:

Perfume, Yubin. Highly underrated in my opinion. This song makes you feel like you're in a luxury shopping mall, and you can afford whatever you want.

Easy, WJSN THE BLACK. I got really into WJSN's music this year. I know nothing about any member lol but it's all. so. good.

Literally every song twice put out, but specifically Four Leaf Clover, Last Waltz, Doughnut. Too much to choose from really.

This top ten list is for songs that were released in 2021 in terms how my absolute faves!

10. Kura Kura, Twice. Already throwing Japanese releases here lol. But this was one of my listened to songs this year. At first I thought it was too...loud? Bombastic? But as an avid twice stan, the amount of shouted "Twice!" really chained me to it. And upon further listening it's one of the more interesting tracks of the year. Twice's Japanese songs always push the envelope a bit more than their Korean title tracks (see Doughnut) and it makes being a fan that much more dynamic. It's such a genuine treat to love Twice because of the diversity in sound.

8. Zombie, Purple Kiss. God, Purple Kiss is so good yall. Yuki especially is phenomenal, and I feel like they are so slept on. Ponzona was excellent and really drew me in, but I felt like this was a perfect first comeback. They pull off creepy cute far too well. Seriously, I cannot overstate how much I love Yuki. Small rappers draw me in I guess lol

7. FILA, Twice. Perhaps controversial, but this is my favorite track on Formula of Love. The disco vibes are, as the kids say, immaculate. Twice truly has so many excellent retro vibes songs in their discography at this point, honestly the whole FOL was that sound perfected, but FILA just makes me want to do the hustle.

6. Lose, Wonho. Yes, Wonho is great at thirst traps. But people are Lose-ing out if they don't also listen to the music. not sorry for the pun. I can also listen to this song on repeat for hours. Lose had an unshakable grip on me in March 2021 and I highly recommend it.

5. SOS, Twice. Back at it with the Twice disco! Taste of Love and FOL packed an absolute punch, and I still listen to TOL while cleaning my house every night. SOS especially is crisp, vibing, perfect for dancing with a broom.

4. Unnatural, WJSN. Every WJSN song had a grip on my this year, but Unnatural was truly an excellent release. The brief pause in the prechorus and the the banging chorus gets me every time.

3. Hula Hoop, LOONA. Another japanese release but hey, it's worth it. This is possibly the best loona song of the past few years?? Another banger that I have listened to on repeat over and over again. I learned the dance which is a mark of how much I love a song. The music video is loona in a nutshell, super cute, and addicting. I love this direction for their japanese debut and I hope they keep going with it.

2. The Feels, Twice. The SHAKING in my limbs when this song first came out lol. Chaeyoung opening just killed me. And the song is their best single this year. Sorry Scientist :( The dance is instantly iconic, and the entire thing is so so twice. One of my most listened to songs of the year. It's just an excellent song.

1. Next Level, aespa. God, I know, I know. I HATED this song when it came out. I ridiculed it nonstop. I couldn't stop listening to it... wait. I couldn't stop listening to it... and then it made my top five for spotify this year lmao. I'm not sure what SM put in this song but it's got me hooked. It's...camp? I liked it ironically and then couldn't stop. Maybe it's a bad song that I got used to, but hey. It's MY bad song that I got used to now. I listen to it when I'm banging out spreadsheets for work, so I reluctantly crown this song my favorite song of 2021, purely for impact, memorability, and the complete reversal of opinion I have on it.

And that's all folks! Like I said, I wanted to start this...journal? blog? place to dump kpop ideas and ficlets that I'm too lazy to flesh out? just so I'd have a place to collect everything for myself. If you'd like to browse feel free <3 love ya.
